I doubt it was the leading period that solved the problem, MRTG will work
with or without it.

It would more likely to be the spaces before and after the minus signs.

You should also try to make your multi targets more readable, MRTG (well,
Perl really) will allow you to split one line into several and append them
together as one line as long as the next line starts with a space, e.g.

Target[device]: 8  -  oid5&oid5:CommStr at device  -
                               oid6&oid6:CommStr at device  -
                               oid7&oid7:CommStr at device  -
                               oid8&oid8:CommStr at device
