I had this same problem early on, and decided that I would 
rename them when I got around to it.  I'm still not completed, but 
I think I'll be finished by the time MRTG-3 comes out.  It will probably 
be dealt with by that time, and all my effort will have been for naught.

Then again, I will be very familiar with all my data, and my hard disk 
will be fairly uncluttered. ;-)

Well, one thing that may offer you/us some hope on that particular twist
is that I have been starting to see a new option in some of the
in-development code trains of Cisco's IOS that indicates you can get the
router to not ever change the relative interface snmp index numbers.  I
haven't experimented with that feature yet but when I noticed it I thought
immediately of exactly what you just pointed out.
