Hi all. I have just compiled MRTG and created my first mrtg.cfg
file. I am not certain where
to go from here or if I need to back up and fix something I broke or missed
the first time.

The confige file was created with this:

./cfgmaker --global "WorkDir: /opt/mrtg/bin/test" \
--global "Options[_]: bits,growright" \
--ifref=ip \
--output /opt/mrtg/mrtg_configs/mrtg.cfg \
public at w.x.y.z

where w.x.y.z is there real IP address of my snmp device.

The above cfgmaker created this file:

# Created by
# ./cfgmaker --global 'WorkDir: /opt/mrtg/bin/test' --global 'Options[_]:
bits,growright' --ifref=ip --output /opt/mrtg/mrtg_configs/mrtg.cfg
public at 172.16.238.146

### Global Config Options

# for UNIX
# WorkDir: /home/http/mrtg

# or for NT
# WorkDir: c:\mrtgdata

### Global Defaults

# to get bits instead of bytes and graphs growing to the right
# Options[_]: growright, bits

WorkDir: /opt/mrtg/bin/test
Options[_]: bits,growright

######################################################################
# System: xoienv1
# Description: Falcon, Environmental Monitor by RLE Technologies
# Contact: uninitialized
# Location: uninitialized
######################################################################

This makes me think the snmp device was actually reached and provided some
information. Should there be more?

I then ran:

./mrtg /opt/mrtg/mrtg_configs/mrtg.cfg --logging /var/log/mrtg.log

In the mrtg.log file it gives a date and time stamp and says "Started mrtg".
I think this is good. When I
check the process table mrtg is not there. Does it just run one time and
stop? No files are created in
the WorkDir. I would think there should be something?

I have never used mrtg before nor do I have any snmp experience. So I
suspect I am missing the big picture
as well as some/many other the little pictures. Like OID's! I played
Asteroids once, but I don't think
this is the same thing. ;-)

Any advice on my next steps(s) and documentation overviews on snmp/mrtg
would be helpful. I have
read the mrtg web site, but I was hoping for something a little more high
level. I am also reading
an artical on snmp which is heping some.

Thanks all!

Norm Clary
