How did you determine the instance value?  if you are using the \ or #
methods, it is entirely possible that there is no such instance.

If the sub-interface is ISL encapsulated and you are running 12.1.T3 or
later, or 12.1.5aE or later, then there should be a properly populated SNMP
schema.

If the sub-interface is 802.1Q or 802.10 encapsulated, there is no support
for IOS to provide you with this information.

If the sub-interface is one of the other hacks, like multiple IPX
encapsulations, again there is no support for this information.
