Neil,


There are two problems with using a batch file for a service.  The first 
is a command window is opened and will require a user to close the 
window on reboot. If you plan on using automated reboots this will be a 
problem since the machine will wait until the batch command window is 
closed.  Second is a true service must communicate back and forth with 
the SCM.  On startup if the service does not report to the SCM in 3000 
milliseconds windoze thinks there is a problem that the service didn't 
start even though in reality it did.    Since you are always reporting 
an error during boot you get used to starting with errors and may miss a 
real error and have problems later.
