[mrtg] Re: Target[_]

You're right, you could be wrong...

Mrtg reads the lines in the config "one at a time" (in other words,
sequentially). If you have a default set with, for example "Options[_]:
growright, nopercent", and later on you have Options[_]: growright, guage",
the first set will be applied to any targets defined between the two default
Option lines, and the second set will apply to those that follow.

In other words, setting a default applies to all following targets, unless
specifically overridden.

You could have "Options[_]: growright, nopercent" at the top of your config.
In the middle, you could have "Options[someservercpu]: growright, gauge".
For the target someservercpu, "growright, gauge" will be applied. For
targets before and after this, "growright, nopercent" will be applied.

To answer an earlier question (If you define a global variable as having
"Options[_]: growright, bits", and you later define
"Options[router.here.com]: bits", will growright still be assumed and come
into effect on target [router.here.com] or will that specific graph "grow
left"???)

With "Options[router.here.com]: bits", only "bits" will be in effect for the
target router.here.com. Nothing is assumed.

Jerry

from what i gather, the global will have precidence as it came before
(before the first interface) any of the interface options you put in.

i could be wrong, mrtg might be reading the lines in the config one at a
time, which would mean that whatever options you specify for an interface
will come into effect.

Which begs the question: If you define a global variable as having
"Options[_]: growright, bits", and you later define
"Options[router.here.com]: bits", will growright still be assumed and
come into effect on target [router.here.com] or will that specific graph
"grow left"???

I read the Default Values example on the config reference...it still
doesn't make sense to me.
