Alex et al,

>From your explanation (thanks for the simplicity), counter wraps will occur
every 4.2Gbs of data transferred.

This could be the cause of my problems when monitoring a Gigabit fibre
interface to our backup server, for which I am getting very strange graphs
out of mrtg. Because of the nature of streaming backups, the traffic rate
is continually high therefore I am making the assumption that if we exceed
14Mb/s, we will experience a counter wrap within mrtg's 5 minute polling
period. (Calculated as 14Mb * 300 seconds = 4.2Gb). Hence the screwed up
results.

As Cisco do not seem to support 64-bit counters on this particular switch,
I was wondering if the situation would be improved by polling the device
more frequently ie. 60 seconds?

I have worked with mrtg for several years now and have developed some neat
html presentation during this time, hence the reluctance to migrate to the
rrdtool backend. But maybe time has finally caught up with me. Would
rrdtool overcome this situation even with 32-bit counters?

Appreciate your comments and thoughts,
