After MRTG has run, look at the first line of the logfile.  Do this
a couple of times.  With this information it becomes clear if it is
mrtg or rateup doing things different from what you expect.

My first response was: rateup cannot handle rates above 2^32 bytes per
second.  This is 4294967296 / 300 = 14,316,557 Bps or 114,532,456 bps.

However, you write about 40 Mbps and this is nowhere near 114.5 Mbps.
Or do you perhaps mean the rate seems to drop by 40 Mbps ?  In that
case the real summed rate would be 114.5 Mbps higher than what's
visible in the graph.
