[mrtg] MRTG graphing stops after DoS attack

I run MRTG on 40-50 Riverstone routers, and when a heavy DoS attack 
comes over the link, MRTG completely stops graphing any traffic on this particular router...it just displays a grey area until the mrtg daemon is restarted.

Is there a way to avoid this?
If not, i will have to put some kind of notifying on to alarm me when it happens.

Any help appreciated.
