I'm not sure that MRTG is the best tool for this, although you could use
the threshhold monitoring aspects (documented in the reference guide). You
could call an external routine that would generate an email which would in
turn be forwarded as an SMS message to your phone.

There are good products on the market that will perform availability
monitoring, some open source some commercial. We have evaluated IPMonitor
(commercial) software that is easy to setup. You can setup various
notification profiles, including time sensitive ones which is a useful
feature if you don;t want to be woken up at 3am... From this we generate an
email to an email account at Orange.net which in turn sends out an SMS
message.

There are various ways of achieving this and the above is only one option.
So have a look around. Worth noting that some email/SMS gateway providers
can get log jammed, therefore your SMS messages can easily be delayed if
you choose the wrong provider. Orange has proven to be very capable in the
UK, but find the right one for you.

Hello,

Does any one know of any SMS tools or modules that can be used in
conjunction with MRTG for notifying people when there is a network problem?

Thanks,
Jezz Palmer.
