[mrtg] Stale Lockfile

I just installed mrtg-2.9.17 on a Mandrake 8.1 system.  It compiled fine.
When trying to run mrtg i get "ERROR: Can't unlink stale lockfile
(test.cfg_l). Permissions?"  I have found one suggestion saying take out the
"my" in line 125, i did this and it created a whole new bunch of errors.  I
am not a perl programmer, nor do I want to be one.  I have compiled and ran
it as root and as a regular user, all my permissions look fine and it just
won't work. Are there any fixes for this?
