[mrtg] Help with MRTG install not covered in FAQ

Hello,
We use this program now for monitoring traffic at our ISP and it is great
but someone else set it up for us.
I am running Slackware 7.1 and trying to install mrtg 2.9.17.tar.gz
Since I dont want to mess up what we already have but do want to learn how
to monitor traffic on some other IP's we have I am trying to install this on
another machine to learn how to do it.

When I follow the instructions and get to the line
    ./configure  --prefix=/usr/local/mrtg-2
everything is fine but when i enter the MAKE command this is the error I
get.

LD_RUN_PATH= gcc -DGFORM_GD=gdImagePng -g -02
src/rateup.c -lgd -lm -lpng -lz -lm -o bin/rateup
src/rateup.c:61: gd.h: No such file or directory
src/rateup.c:g2: gdfonts.h No such file or directory
Make: *** [bin/rateup] Error 1

Any clues?
I should also mention I am new to linux but one of our techs knows it and
couldnt figure it out. (of course he uses Mandrake)
