What exactly do you need to know?

Install MRTG.
Decide what device will be your test bed.
Make config for said device.
Run mrtg with that config against the device.
MRTG collects data.
MRTG gives back two errors, one saying the .log file doesn't exist, the 
other one indicates the .old file doesn't exist.  Both are expected.
Wait 5 minutes.
MRTG runs again, but this time with one error, stating the .old file 
can't be removed. This is ok.
Wait 5 minutes.
MRTG runs for the third time.  
Rateup draws meaningful graphs and html pages are generated.

So, after 15 minutes, you can look at what MRTG is grabbing and you will 
see the start of some pretty interesting graphs.
