Hello all,

I don't think I expressed my question very well yesterday, and today on
closer inspection and rethinking my question, I don't think the question I
asked yesterday was the correct question at all. Let me try again with more
information.  :)

I had run mrtg successfully on a Solaris 7 server. mrtg had already been in
place there, I only went through a download and update process once for
mrtg.

On the newly installed Solaris 8, I seem to be having trouble getting all of
the pieces and parts together to allow mrtg to run properly. I thought I
would go with the most current releases of all of the supporting software.
I think this is where I am getting into trouble.

Here are the versions of everything I am installing for mrtg:

zlib   1.1.4
libpng 1.2.2
gd     1.8.4
GCC    2.95.3
perl   5.6.1
MRTG   2.9.17

Because of the error message I receive when running mrtg, I had first
thought I had a libpng problem.
Here is the message:

libpng appears to be the application complaining at run time or is does the
bottom line mean gd is complaining? I'm not sure.

>> libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.0.6
>> libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.2.0
>> gd-png: fatal libpng error: Incompatible libpng version in application
and library

I do not have a previous installation of libpng on this Solaris 8 system.
When I search for the png.* files I find both png.c and png.h files are in
/export/home/username/libpng-1.2.2/libpng.

When I look at the only png.h and png.c files I have, I see they both are
rev 1.2.2.

* png.h - header file for PNG reference library
 *
 * libpng version 1.2.2 - April 15, 2002
 * Copyright (c) 1998-2002 Glenn Randers-Pehrson
 * (Version 0.96 Copyright (c) 1996, 1997 Andreas Dilger)
 * (Version 0.88 Copyright (c) 1995, 1996 Guy Eric Schalnat, Group 42, Inc.)

* png.c - location for general purpose libpng functions
 *
 * libpng version 1.2.2 - April 15, 2002
 * Copyright (c) 1998-2002 Glenn Randers-Pehrson
 * (Version 0.96 Copyright (c) 1996, 1997 Andreas Dilger)
 * (Version 0.88 Copyright (c) 1995, 1996 Guy Eric Schalnat, Group 42, Inc.)

So this incompatible libpng problem must be coming from something other than
libpng, gd appears to be the next suspect.

Noting the gd-png error I ran "strings" on file pngtogd in my ./gd
subdirectory and I found this inside:

 libpng version 1.2.0 - September 1, 2001
   Copyright (c) 1998-2001 Glenn Randers-Pehrson
   Copyright (c) 1996, 1997 Andreas Dilger
   Copyright (c) 1995, 1996 Guy Eric Schalnat, Group 42, Inc.
 1.2.0 libpng version 1.2.0 - September 1, 2001 (header)

So I believe the error I noted before isn't so much a libpng problem, as I
first thought, but rather a problem with gd having been compiled with older
libraries.

I am now checking to see if there is anything to do about that...

Ron
