take a look at mrtg-misc-probe to be found at

	http://pwo.de/projects/mrtg/

the "pong" section of mrtg-misc-probe ping's a target and returns 0 or
1 depending on whether the ping returns "reachable" or not.

If you are running mrtg on Windows, the Unix Bourne shell script
mrtg-msc-probe could serve as an example for a windows batch file.
