[mrtg] Re: Does ifInOctets include the broadcasts and unicasts?

Eric,

ifInOctets counts the the total number of bytes received on an interface, regardless of the type of packet these bytes are in.
IfInUcastPkts and ifInNucastPkts count the number of packets received on an interface. The number of packets on a network is not a very usefull counter to monitor, unless you also monitor the size of the packets.

The number of broadcasts on a (V)LAN can have a negative effect on the performance of the hosts connected to that part of the network. The reason for this is that every broadcast causes an interrupt at the CPU of every host. If you get to many of these it will slow down the machines, the slower machines suffer most.

With this in mind at every LAN/VLAN of our network I do monitor the number of ifInNucastPkts. This is not exactly the same as monitoring the number of broadcasts, but as long as this number stays low, the number of broadcasts is low too.

Jan.

Does the total in ifInOctets include ifInUcastPkts and ifInNucastPkts? And likewise for the Out? Should I be graphing unicast and non-unicast
(broadcasts?) packets separately?

I bet that was just his email program translating the public at a.b.c.d as an email address.

good morning,

i am not sure why there is, what appears to be an E-mail address in your config's target parameter. is this just an E-mail formatting problem or does this exist in your config?

if it is in your config, remove it. Ala:
Target[10.0.0.1]: 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.2.1.1.25.25&1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.2.1.1.25.25:public at 10.0.0.1

hope this helps,
dean

Hello,

I'm a newby to MRTG, here is my problem :
I'm trying to gather collisions from my CISCO boxes using MRTG
I have found a sample script on SOMEX but when I run the script with MRTG, I
    encounter a problem
Does anyone has an idea ?

    Thanks in advance
