Correction grasshopper - that is done via RRDTool.  MRTG works 
in the 5 minute trending world.  If you want more detail, you will need 
to "roll your own" collector and build your RRD by hand.

Is it possible to set up MRTG so it generates detailed hourly graphs
fetching snmp data every 9-10 seconds (or less) ?

I see that http://maple.canet3.net/mrtgc4/ntn/all.html does this.
