We are able to successfully monitor CPU, memory and disk utilization on
Win2K and NT4 servers (as well as NetWare, Linux, SCO UNIX, and a few other
operating systems). All of our Intel-based servers are Compaq Proliants, and
we use the Compaq Insight Manager agents, which support these statistics
(and hundreds of others!). Most major server vendors supply similar agents
with similar capabilities.
Regarding the SNMP4NT MIBs, be aware that these rely on MS's performance
counters for CPU utilization, which is seriously broken on multi-processor
machines. Also, I understand that the disk utilization stats from Win2K's
native support of the Host Resources MIB is also broken, in that the numbers
reported only get updated when the SNMP service starts. Finally, the memory
stats from MS's performance counters only include the sum of physical and
vitual memory, making their use somewhat less than ideal.
Bottom line, if monitoring servers is important to you, buy real servers
from vendors that support the functionality you need. Forget about MS ever
getting SNMP support right.

Subject: [mrtg] Help with Win2k CPU-HDD-Memory monitoring !!!
Hi all,
I've been trying for some time now to set up MRTG to
monitor some typical components on Win2k and NT4
servers such as CPU,Memory and Harddisk remaining
space.
I've been around all the websites and downloaded and
installed SNMP4WIN2K and SNMP4NT on a couple of
servers.
I can successfully monitor traffic throughput, but
always have problems graphing anything else on
Win2k/NT4.
Has anybody out there managed to do this successfully
??
All I'm interested in at this point is monitoring the
CPU
Hard Disk (remaining space)
Memory (available memory)
I would greatly appreciate any tips or CFG files you
have found to be successfull.
Thanks,
Leandro
