On a MRTG target line you *DO NOT* place OIDs.
You place OIDs *AND* instances.  This is in the FAQ.

If snmpget host public OID works then this is NOT what you need
to use in the mrtg cfg file.

Use snmpwalk to see the OID with all of its instances.
