[mrtg] Unusual behavior when running mrtg

I am running:
Linux netmon 2.4.18-27.8.0 #1 Fri Mar 14 06:45:49 EST 2003 i686 i686 i386
GNU/Linux
And have installed the latest versions of zlib, libpng and gd.

Can anyone help me explain this behavior?  I create the config file with

cfgmaker --no-down --descint --subdirs --global "workdir:/var/www/html/ts"
-- global "Options[_]: growright,bits" --output=/var/www/html/mrtg.cfg

Then after running

./mrtg /var/www/html/ts/mrtg.cfg

I receive many errors like the following
