[mrtg] Tracking errors on a serial line

I'm using MRTG to track all sorts of things, and I just added configs to track errors on a couple Cisco routers with serial interfaces that have been showing occasional errors. The configs look something like...

Target[nyc-inet1-errors]: 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.14.1&1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.14.1:community at nyc-inet1 * 300
Title[nyc-inet1-errors]: Traffic Analysis for 1 -- nyc-inet1 ERROR TRAFFIC - errors per 5 min
MaxBytes[nyc-inet1-errors]: 99999999
PageTop[nyc-inet1-errors]: <H1>Traffic Analysis for 1 -- nyc-inet1 ERROR TRAFFIC - errors per 5 min</H1>
 <TABLE>
   <TR><TD>System:</TD>     <TD>nyc-inet1 in </TD></TR>
   <TR><TD>Maintainer:</TD> <TD></TD></TR>
   <TR><TD>Description:</TD><TD>Serial1/0 T1 to Globix</TD></TR>
 </TABLE>

However, when the router sees a few hundred errors, MRTG only counts it as one or two. Why? I've got the * 300 to offset the fact that MRTG will divide it by 300 to get a per-second number rather that per-5-minutes.

I know I'm missing something obvious.
