[mrtg] $$rcfg{target}{foo} did not eval into defined data

I dug around for a hour or so trying to figure out why I was getting these
"did not eval into defined data" messages after a new install of 2.10.11
I've seen a couple of posts about it, but no real answers.

The errors went away when I turned off forks so I could run the perl
debugger.

Since it is running fine without forks, I'll leave it that way, but if
someone with more time and a better understanding of forks wants to dig into
this issue I'd love to have a better solution.
