[mrtg] Graphic format confusion

In my installation of mrtg 2.10.8 on Windows 2000, I've designated gif as the
graphic format file format.  And mrtg generates files with a .gif extension.
But when I try to save the images from a web browser (IE6), the only options
for file extensions that the browser shows are png and bmp.  Is there
something I'm not doing correctly in specifying gif as the graphic format?
Or is mrtg actually generating png files and just giving them a gif
extension?
