[mrtg] mrtg/rrdtool problem

I'm posting this to both mrtg and rrd-users because I'm not sure where the
problem lies.

I have had a RedHat 7.3 server running mrtg 2.9.25 and rrdtool 1.0.39 for
quite some time. I was not involved when the server was initially
configured. I decided to upgrade to mrtg 2.10.11 and rrdtool 1.0.45. I now
get the following errors:

ERROR: Target[10.72.19.1_1][_IN_] ' $target->[0]{$mode} ' did not eval into
defined data
ERROR: Target[10.72.19.1_1][_OUT_] ' $target->[0]{$mode} ' did not eval into
defined data
ERROR: Target[10.72.19.1_2][_IN_] ' $target->[1]{$mode} ' did not eval into
defined data
ERROR: Target[10.72.19.1_2][_OUT_] ' $target->[1]{$mode} ' did not eval into
defined data
I was getting this for all of my router config files, so I created a new
mrtg.cfg file and a single router config file to test with. When I remove
the "LogFormat: rrdtool", mrtg alone will collect the data in the .log file
and produce the html and png files, so I know it's collecting data. It's
apparently something in the interface between mrtg and rrdtool, but I'm not
sure where to begin troubleshooting. If it matters, I used zlib 1.2.1, gd
1.8.4, and libpng 1.2.5 to compile mrtg with. I notice that rrdtool comes
with zlib 1.1.4, gd 1.3, and libpng 1.0.9.

I ran rrdtool info against one of the rrd databases and it indicates unknown
data. I also tried changing the IP address in the router config file to
verify that the error is not a connection problem. I get additional errors
when it can't connect to the router.

If someone can give me some idea what to try next to get this working, I'd
appreciate it. Thanks.
