If you want to check ping times from within MRTG you can use pingprobe:

Hi
I am one of the old users of MRTG and I found it very useful . I have
setup MRTG up and running for monitoring of WAN traffic on Cisco 3660
router . Pls advise how to monitor CPU and interface errors on Serial WAN
links ,I am using point to point links . Also advise how to monitor ping
response between my system and another system . Regards Bhupesh
