You can change your configuration to fixed names in stead of ever
changing index numbers as follows:
1. make a copy of your current *.cfg file
2. stop the mrtg polling
3. rerun your previous cfgmaker command with the '--ifref=descr' added
4. Per interface copy the *.log and *.old file and rename to the names
you find in the new *.cfg file. (for instance the file router_14.log
will become router_Se0.log)
5. Start MRTG again with the new cfg file.
this is the way to go, except step3:
if you only once have to go through this interface change,
just replace step 3 by this one:
3a: rerun cfgmaker, but output to a different file. (mrtg2.bis)
3b: for the interfaces which have changed from name, also do step 4
So, if you have an mrtg.cfg with oid1 and oid3
with the new interface you create an mrtg2.cfg
this contains oid1, oid2 and oid4(previously oid3)
then just rename all your oid3.blabla files to oid4
after this, you can replace mrtg.cfg with mrtg2.cfg,
and restart mrtg.
your old interfaces will continue their logfiles, and your new ones will be
created.
(P.S: make a backup of those files, just in case)
