I've got a couple of hundred.  I've got one master file that uses
Include: statements.  I build that on the fly from my database of hosts
that I want to monitor.  And I use forks:20 or so - more than that and
it gets confused.

I scatter the configs in a hierarchy of subdirectories, and include the
directory[target]: some/levels/deep for each target, again generated on
the fly from a database (actually, I create a script of cfgmaker
commands that uses the --directory=prefix/HOSTNAME directive).
