Are you sure about that? Here's a quote straight from the cfgmaker.html
page at MRTG:

--output=file     output filename default is STDOUT

I just downloaded the latest version of MRTG. I followed the setup &
install directions on the Win32 page. The problem I have is that if I
issue the following command:
 

perl cfgmaker public at 192.168.0.1 --global "WorkDir: c:\www\mrtg"
-output=mrtg.cfg

 

I do not get a mrtg.cfg file. Where is this file stored? I searched my
entire hard drive, and the only mrtg.cfg files are in the mrtg contib
directory.
