[mrtg] Thresholds not checked with graphs suppressed?

I'm in the process of migrating to distributed MRTG monitoring 
platforms, and eventually to RRD.  In an attempt to lighten the load on 
my "original" MRTG (v2.9.10) host, I suppressed all of the graphs.  It 
appears that this caused the thresholds to no longer be checked.  Is 
this normal behavior?  If so, do I have to create the daily graph in 
order to have the thresholds monitored every five minutes, or can I just 
create the yearly graph yet still have 5m threshold checking?
