The problem is that if the number increments less than 300, you'll 
end up with a number less than one, which MRTG does not 
deal with.

Remember that MRTG does rates per five minutes by default.
If you have a number that is incrementing less than 300 per five 
minutes, you'll end up with a number less than 1, which 
will get dropped.  Either use RRDTool or multiply your 
number by 300 (attacks per 5 minutes).
