[mrtg] libgd on Solaris

I'm trying to figure out why libgd (v2.0.x and greater) has to be build 
without shared libraries 
(according to http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/mrtg-unix-guide.html)

Could anybody enlighten me, because It's been quite a while since I've installed a new version
of libgd :)
