[mrtg] Can we check if router interafaces are alive or dead?

Hi All,

I have a samll network i use a cisco 2500 series
router.I have been using Mrtg to monitor traffic.I
want to know if any kind of alert system can be set up
using mrtg if a link failure occurs. I would want the
system to report via email if a link fails.

Kindly help with suggestions
