[mrtg] Too many lock files

I'm finding there are a lot of lock files for some of my configs, that look like this: device1.cfg_l_1234 

Can anyone explain why I'm seeing this kind of behaviour. I'm running mrtg-2.9.17-13 or a Redhat 9 box.

also, does mrtg log errors, and if so to where? I don't  see any kind of logs in /var/log/
