[mrtg] Re: Skipping "Public"

Couple things could be happening:
1) SNMP is not installed. Windows default installations will not have it,
although the later versions of the Dell setup app do prompt you to install.
Check services to make sure it's there, otherwise add/remove programs |
Windows Components and add it.

2) SNMP community names could be different. Renaming the SNMP communities is
a good practice, and that may be your issue. Check the security tab on the
SNMP service to see what community names you're using.

3) Something is in the way. You could have a firewall or router blocking
SNMP.

Good luck, it's s cool tool. Look into the getlog perl scripts by Paul
Simmonson. It's great for getting all your perfmon data into MRTG.

Subject: [mrtg] Skipping "Public"

I've a follow situation that I hope that someone can help shedding some
lights on it......my apology for the long post, I just want to ensure to
include relevant info...

Background: Dell PowerEdge Windows 2000 SP4 server, Dell PowerEdge Windows
NT4 SP6, MRTG v2.13, Active Perl v5.82.808 ( also tried MRTG v2.11, Active
Perl 5.61...gave me same problem)

Anyway, I've a couple Windows NT4 SP6 and Windows 2K SP4 servers. On one of
the Windows 2000 Advanced server (member of existing domain), I was able to
run MRTG to create MRTG.CFG file and *.pgn and *.html files were generated
just fine....everything looked reallly good. Then I tried to run the same
MRTG commands, using different server's ip addresses and work dir, on 2 NT4
servers, and 1 Win2000 Standard server, but somehow it didn't work after I
executed the command:

c:\mrtg11\bin\perl cfgmaker public at 10.163.10.22 --global "WorkDir:
c\mrtg\data\gw10" --output mrtg.cfg

.....gives the results.....

--base: Get Device Info on Public at 10.163.10.22
WARNING: Skipping public at 10.163.10.22: as no info could be retrieved

  --base: Writing mrtg.cfg (shown below)

# Created by
# cfgmaker public at 10.163.10.22 --global 'WorkDir: c:\mrtgdata\gw10' --output
mrtg.cfg

### Global Config Options

# for UNIX
# WorkDir: /home/http/mrtg

# or for NT
# WorkDir: c:\mrtgdata

### Global Defaults

# to get bits instead of bytes and graphs growing to the right #
Options[_]: growright, bits

EnableIPv6: no

# System:
# Description:
# Contact:
# Location:
######################################################################

WorkDir: c:\mrtgdata\gw10

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things I've tried but it still didn't work:
   1. installed and reinstalled SNMP service
   2. verified that SNMP community is set to "public" with RO access
   3. rebooted the server
  4. tried MRTG from a different box using MRTG v2.10.11 with Active Perl
v5.6.1

What else am I missing? Has anyone encountered the same issue before?
Please help.

Thank You.

Hieu
