Here's where I'm at now - installing mrtg from source (as opposed to 
a fink or other automated method.

I've probably installed a dozen packages I don't need, but...

I see references to ether ./configure or

./configure CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/local/include 
-I/opt/local/include/libart-2.0 -I/opt/local/include/freetype2 
-I/opt/local/include/libpng" LDFLAGS="-L/opt/local/lib -ltcl8.4" 
--disable-python --with-tcllib=/opt/local/lib

With the above I get errors:

creating rrdcgi
Making all in bindings
Making all in tcl
make[3]: Nothing to be done for `all'.
cd perl-piped && make
cd perl-shared && make RPATH=/usr/local/rrdtool-1.2.11/lib
Making all in doc
make[2]: Nothing to be done for `all'.
Making all in examples
make[2]: Nothing to be done for `all'.
