[mrtg] Adding only one side of a target

I understand how to add OID results when both the IN and OUT need to be
added:
Target[myrouter]: OID1&OID2:public at mydevice + OID3&OID4:public at mydevice

paraphrased from
http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/mrtg-reference.html for
multi-target syntax.

The problem I have is that my Target has an OID for total Successes but has
2 OIDs for failures. I would like to graph the success and failures on the
same graph.
I have tried variations of:

Target[myrouter]: OID1&(OID2 + OID3):public at mydevice

but have had no success. I'm using mrtg-2.11.1

Any advice?
