The script (mailstats) isn't getting confused.  It's outputting exactly

its being told to output.

You need to modify the output of the mailstats program so that it looks
like:
in
out
uptime
hostname
IOW, the output from above should look something like so:
# /usr/sbin/mailstats
4
9
16:03:20:45
postman
