[mrtg] GigE interface counter problems

I am positive this has been asked before, but I have not seen a complete and
full answer to it, and maybe it's a Cisco thing...

We are graphing a GigE interface on a Cisco 7609 router. There is a fairly
constant 350 MBPS traffic on this interface, while our graphs show about 80
MBPS. I have read numerous posts about using the 64 bit counters, and from
what I understand all that needs to be done is to append ":::::2" to the IP
address of the router on the Target line and it should be pulling the 64 bit
counter as opposed to the 32 bit counter:

Target[gig8_1_1]: 53:xxxxx at 12.23.34.45:::::2

However, it makes no difference in the graph.

Versions:

MRTG: 2.11.1
RRDTool: 1.0.45

Thanks!
