MRTG includes a couple of specials.
Target[filename]: ifOperHack.x&ifAdminHack.x:public at ipaddress
where x is the port number

This gives operationally up/down and administered up/down (each in the 
form zero or one) for each port.
What I do is monitor each port seperately, and store data using RRD, and 
use the User-defined graph in Routers2.cgi to summarise it for me as a 
total per switch. This works for 24 port switches, but I'm not sure how 
far up you would be able to scale it.
