If you want to run at 5 sec intervals for fault-finding, don't use MRTG, 
use STG

For MRTG 5 secs, I think you need to define the RRD database accordingly. 
I think it is easiest at the point of creation, rather than modifying an 
existing database. It's not something I have done, but is often asked 
about, so read the archive
