I use Apache with modperl. You can use more Apache forks.
Using modperl is great speed improvement.
Another big speed improvement is splitting of mrtg config file.
I have many included config files, one per host.

I have speed problems, only when my Linux machine flushes disk
caches about 2GB to disks.
