[mrtg] Script Howto

All,
I am trying to run mrtg/rrd using crontab in FreeBSD 5.4. I have about 
110 lines in my crontab and my machine has become very slow and 
unresponsive. I am curious if there is an easier way to do this. How 
could I speed up my machine? I have read that you can make the config 
files Run As Daemon, I know how to make the changes to the config files, 
but how do you write a script or put in the RC? Could someone point me 
to a how to guide?
