[mrtg] rateup did not return anything sensible... no kidding??

I have had to migrate my MRTG install to a new server and I am having one
serious hard time with what would appear to be rateup?
I store all my graphs/logs in /var/www/mrtg/<routername> so I wholesale
rsynced that directory structure over.
The old system was Gentoo Linux where I used the portage packages.
The new system is RedHat WKS 4.1 where I am using pure source code
installs.
I had path issues with perl/mrtg at first, but symbolic links putting the
/usr/local/mrtg-2/lib & bin into findable locations seems to have solved
that.
I verified that my ulk discovery scripts that create the individual
<routername>.cfg files work, and my bulk indexmaker script is sifting
through them making nice main index pages in my /var/www/mrtg directory.
But when MRTG is run (as user:group mrtg:mrtg, new in redhat where it was
root:root) it coughs these on everything yet the TIMESTAMP on each devices
interface index shows new every 5 mins as it should.. It's like it's just
not actualy graphing. (yup, still using hard graphs, not rrdtool ;)
I am trying to up the logging while I get my sys-admin to install strace
so I can find something better in my logs than this..
Does this ring any obvious bells or has anyone got suggestions on what I
might enable for debugging? I tried "log" but I got a much more verbose
"generic error" :)
inprod5 /etc/mrtg # tail /var/log/mrtg.log_ng
