If you add the minus sign, then it changes how the data are stored. Basically, the In and Out counts are swapped before storing in the RRD. This will not change the display of existing data, though! All it does is reverse the data between retrieval and storage.
If you want to change the way existing data are stored, your only option is to change teh labels by redefining Legend{IO1234} to reflect how you want them displayed.
If you are using the Routers2 frontend, there is also the 'reverse' extended option which swaps the data between storage and display. This may be what you want.
