[mrtg] snmpget failing after switching from polling 32 bit to 64 bit interface counters

Since you have switched to SNMPv2, check also that the device ACLs permit you to access these OIDs.  Many devices will have separate ACLs for SNMPv1 and SNMPv2 and you might be able to see the OIDs using the former but not the latter.
