You forgot to mention your OS.

It will probably be some older linux, that doesn't report the actual
bytes transfered. Instead, it keeps track of the number of packets
and multiplies this with a value. Big frames will have been used when
you were transfering your files, and therefore the multiplier used
by linux will be too far off.

There has been some discussion on this problem, some people use the
ip firewall accounting to get the counters.
