Indeed. Even if you do not use them to actually provide the data
to any script, they are still invaluable for debugging purposes.

Also it is good to realize what happens on the lower level so to
understand what mrtg is doing (or any other snmp program for that
matter).

You don't need to know everything about snmp to get it working,
however some basics are required.
