I have never used the 2980, but have a couple of 2924's and we have several 3548XLs as well. The 3548's and 29xx's don't run the same operating system. The 35xx's run the catalyst specific IOS, which is quite a bit different in functionality than the cisco IOS that the cat 29xx's are running. At least, it has alot of extra options, like bundling ports, you can cluster the 3548's, making one big logical switch from multiple individual pieces of hardware. If you really are looking for performance on your switches, you might want to look at Extreme Networks, or Alteon. I have been able to sustain about ~19Mb/s over the cat switches, yet I regularly sustain ~87Mb/s over the Extreme switches. This is while cloning filesystems, and migrating databases around. They cost more though, so you really have to be somewhere where being able to optimally us a 100Mb/s network is important. -Tim On Wed Nov 08, 2000 at 12:41:01PM -0500, Krawczyk, Jeff wrote: > > Greetings; > > Can anyone offer some insight on the comparison between the Cisco Catalyst > 2980G vrs. the Catalyst 3548XL? > I have the specs but I would really love to hear from an actual user.
