Jakob,
  Well, anything is possible. :)  Actually it wouldn't be that hard.
The rrd_fetch(...) method  could be modularized to support  multiple
databases.  Since I'm doing this in C, it won't be as easy as doing it
in say the DBI perl module, but it could  definitely be done.
