[rrd-developers] ds-name length

Is there a specific reason why the RRD ds-name can only be 19 characters 
in length? I'm using the ds-name to uniquely identify a piece of data
and it would take extra mapping to generate unique sub-19 character 
identifiers. Is it safe to increase the length and would a request
to increase it in the source depository be considered?
